With their extensive list of A-listers they already dress for the red carpet, it makes sense that Badgley Mischka would also capitalize on their reputation for gilding the lily by adding a costume jewelry line to their offerings. Relying on the same sources of inspiration as their clothing – vintage accessories from Chanel and Miriam Haskell with Indian maharaja bling – there will be looks for bridal, evening and day.
The $50 to $500 (wholesale) collection will be available at higher-end department stores and chi chi boutiques and include a bib necklace fashioned from hematites and white crystals and long white crystal earrings that reach the shoulder; many of the pieces will also include pearls, topaz, and pyrite.
"We've been thinking of doing jewelry for two years," Mark Badgley recently told WWD about their latest license (the sixteenth in their extensive roster, which includes everything from bags to shoes to lingerie and belts). Instead of doing full-on diamonds or fine jewelry, the duo opted for good-looking paste, and partnered up with Sequin, a NYC-based fashion jewelry outfit that sells at Henri Bendel, Nordstrom, the Home Shopping Network, and private labels for Target and Express.
"Our customer is getting younger and younger. It's a paradox in the fashion industry," says James Mischka, the duo’s other half. "A lot of women don't want to buy a diamond necklace. [With costume] she can travel with it."
