Marc Jacobs for fall, in stark contrast to his spring collection, has subdued body cloaking and subtle pastels, sedate designs which are elegant and simplistic.

The Marc Jacobs collection features a touch of the monastic and medieval, with draped hooded Guinevere-type gowns (think Princess Leia from Star Wars), and monastically conservative suits in subdued metallics with pleating detail. No chocolate browns or winter burgundy’s here, instead expect soft grays and icey neutrals.

This season is all about coats and jackets. Whilst the majority of high-end labels have gone for strong structured shapes with sculpted collars, sleeves, and shoulders, Marc Jacobs’ designs are softer, more sporty (Flashdance jazzercise headbands?) and simple; with vertical folds of flowing fabric and pleating.

Marc Jacobs Collection Vs Marc by Marc Jacobs

In stark contrast to the “Marc by Marc Jacobs” label which showcases neon colors and shaped silhouettes; the “Marc Jacobs” collection, features slightly masculine, conservative styles, with dropped-hemlines and boxy jackets. Belts are conspicuously absent and there is not a cinched-waist in sight. Instead there were boxy pleats and wide hip-slung sashes.

Medieval Trend

Part of the subtlety lies in the shawl collars and draped hoods and necklines, on dresses, tops and coats. Elegant maxi gowns have a Medieval appeal, reminiscent of the days of the Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. These decadent draped dresses are simplistic in styling, needing no embellishments. Stella McCartney also favors this trend, with her cowl-neck Middle-Ages-inspired tunics. Marc Jacobs’ distinctive cowl-back velvet gown has just arrived in store at Net-a-porter.com for £2,335.

Marc Jacobs’ Inspiration for Fall

“Calm, glamour and casual”, were Jacob’s responses, when asked by Style.com to talk about his inspiration for fall, in their Marc Jacobs "Runway Review". Style quotes this respected Ameican designer, however, as revealing that “ I really wasn’t very inspired this season." Fall sweaters take on a preppy look and jackets are low-hung rather than cropped. Currently the collection is typically receiving a mixed reviews from fashion blogs; although Jacobs says he thrives on the reaction of love and hate, " It's indifference that bores me to death."

Marc Jacobs Accessories for Fall 2008

Once famous for his "misplaced heel", a key feature of the collection was Jacob’s intr oduction of a lower heel on shoes and boots. From the low-heeled riding boot to wrap-around style to this seaon's distinctive peep-toe shoe-boot. Women’s fashion glossies (like Elle July 2008) have picked up on probably the label’s most distinctive footwear of the season, a slouchy suede boot with ring heel. Soft and slouchy suede is an up-and-coming look.

Loafers are also making a comeback this fall, and Marc Jacob patent mouse loafers with squared toe (Net-A-Porter, £295) are versatile enough to last many seasons

In the handbag department, there is a gorgeous Stam-style bag in purple ostrich, with chain strap, which has been feted by thebagforum.com. For something a little more traditional but with a modern twist, there is a tan and black leather satchel with a distinctively large chain, reminiscent of a dog’s collar. The Marc Jacobs official website, Marcjacobs.com, has yet to post details and prices, however, so keep checking.
